With the skeleton of The Trader left unexcavated, the only information we have from that grave is limited to the beautiful jade and turquoise effigy.
What an intriguing piece of history it is! It’s like nothing ever found in Utah before! The problem is, the effigy raises more questions than answers.
It is obvious that this is not a piece of work crafted by the Anasazi. So what is it? Where did it come from? How did it get to Utah?
As you may have guessed, my ceramic study has been side-lined by this mysterious artifact. Dr. Peet thinks the effigy may have come from Mesoamerica. If that’s the case, could its presence in Anasazi-land offer insight into the Anasazi trade?
Unfortunately, I’ll have to stand in line to study the effigy myself. We’d barely returned to the university with it when it was whisked away for meticulous cleaning and restoration. It’s attracted a lot of attention on campus. It even brought Dr. John Friedman out of retirement. He’s taking over the research on the effigy and I’m anxious to hear about his findings.
