Bill Craig Interview

In keeping with the adventurous spirit of Indiana Jones, that action hero who inspires so many of us who love to read along on exciting quests, Bill Craig has created his own lineup of characters for the admiring fan to explore.
  One of those characters is Hardluck Hannigan, and Bill has agreed to share a little bit about this fearless character featured in his own six volume-and-counting series.

Welcome Bill!  Tell us a little bit about Hardluck Hannigan and what inspired you to create this character.

The creation of Hardluck Hannigan came about in an adventure writers group discussion involving Sean Ellis, Wayne Skiver, and my ex-wife. We were discussing a shared universe, and I pulled Hardluck Hannigan as an 80 some yr old man into one of my Jack Riley adventure novels, THE MUMMY'S TOMB. I liked the character enough to want to explore his origins and see what made him into the man he was in THE MUMMY'S TOMB.

What do you hope readers come away with after reading one of Hardluck Hannigan's adventures?


I hope that they come away with a sense of fun,a good adventure romp that will leave them wanting more.

Tell us a little about yourself, Bill.

I taught myself to read at the age of 4 and I started writing my own stories at the age of 6 because I felt I could write better stories than what I was reading.

So who or what inspired the creation of Hardluck Hannigan?

Doc Savage and Indiana Jones were big inspirations for Hardluck Hannigan.  I also say that Hannigan is influenced by Jerry Ahern's then Survivalist series. Hannigan and John Ourke are a lot alike in the fact that they try to be prepared for whatever they face.

For me, writing adventures often requires some kind of research.  What kind of research do you do when writing your stories? 

I let the story be told by the characters so research is kept to a minimum.

What has surprised you most about writing Hardluck Hannigan's adventures?

The biggest surprise is that the characters take over during the writing. I am just an outlet, the story belongs to them.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the sixth Hardluck Hannigan book, THE GOLDEN SCORPION as well my fourth Decker P.I. novel, SMUGGLER'S BLUES, and the second Joe Collins book DARKEST NIGHT, and a stand-alone book titled, SAVAGE AUTUMN or HARMONY HILLS.
