Quetzalcoatl – From the Nahuatl language – Quetzal, referring to the tropical quetzal bird, Coatl, the Nahuatl word for snake or serpent. As a result, Quetzalcoatl is known as the feathered serpent deity of Mesoamerica.

Chaco Canyon has been central to my work for over three years now. More specifically, my research focuses on the roadways that web the region. These roadways can span up to ten meters wide, fifty kilometers long and are often paved with packed earth or broken pottery and, in some areas, are bordered with stone and earthen berms. Besides working in the field or lab, an anthropologist’s next best friend is the library.

I’m so excited!
Today Angie brought me a tray of potsherds that had been collected from a kiln that had been excavated in Chaco Canyon years ago. My initial observation of these sherds tells me they look exactly like my sherds collected from the ranch. If this is the case, I might have found the very place my ranch pottery was created! Okay, now that I’ve laid out this impossible task I’ve immersed myself into, I should share what I’ve found so far.
